Israel (Hebrew: יִשְׂרָאֵל/Yisra'el) is a country in the Middle East. The modern state proclaimed to be the successor of the various ancient Jewish states that once occupied Palestine prior the Arabic occupation.

As a modern country, it was founded in 1947 from a Palestinian territory previously colonized by the United Kingdom as a state for the Jewish people after the Holocaust during World War II. Conflict with the local Arabic populations has led to several wars with the neighboring Arabic countries, as a result, the country's status remains disputed to this day.
