A utility pole is a column or post, frequently made of wood, used to support overhead power lines and various other public utilities, such as electrical cable, fiber optic cable, and related equipment such as transformers and street lights.
Depending on the application they may be referred by various names, such as transmission pole, telephone pole, telecommunication pole, power pole, telegraph pole, and telegraph post.
Should not be confused with a transmission tower, which are large towers, frequently made of a steel lattice, used to carry high voltage electrical lines.
